CM J Jayalalithaa announces slew of road projects

Monday 1 April 2013

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced various infrastructure projects across Tamilnadu, including an elevated expressway from Taramani in Chennai to Mahabalipuram. She also announced 18 railway over bridges in 11 districts of the State.

Reading out a statement under Rule 110 in the Assembly, she said her government has been giving priority to road upgradation projects, since infrastructure is very important for the growth of the State.

She said a 45-km long elevated expressway would be constructed from Taramani to Mamallapuram to reduce traffic flow due to the growth of IT companies and residential apartments on the IT highway. '

The project will be taken up in two phases', she said and added that the work would be completed from Taramani upto Siruseri in the first phase and from Siruseri to Mamallapuram in the second phase.

The Chief Minister said Rs five crore would be allocated to prepare a detailed plan to implement the project at the earliest.

Jayalalithaa said the 22-km road upto Thiruniniravur upto Padi was handed over to National Highways Authority of India in 2005 based on the request of NHAI. However, the authority did not upgrade the road since there was no provision for toll collection. Hence the road is now in a damaged condition, the Chief Minister said. '

The road would be taken again under the control of the State government and would be developed as a six-lane road at a cost of Rs 168 crore. In the first phase, the road would be developed as a four-lane stretch at a cost of Rs 98 crore'.

The Chief Minister said a 20-storeyed multilevel parking lot would be set up at Siruseri at a cost of Rs 200 crore, in the 4.9 acre land which was given by Tamilnadu Road Development Corporation to SIPCOT on a 99 year lease. The parking lot will house 2000 vehicles and 50 buses, she said.

Jayalalithaa said a 39.40 km long four way lane would be created near Thandalam-Perambakkam-Thakkolam to enable trucks to easily reach the dry port at Mappedu in Thiruvallur district.

She said a by-pass road would be constructed at a cost of Rs 98 crore from Thanjavur New collectorate to Peramblaur-Manamadurai road, which will cover a total distance of 14.27 crore.

A total of 131 culverts will be constructed at a cost of Rs 300 crore and 67 government roads will be laid over a distance of 215 km at a cost of Rs 100 crore with the help of NABARD.

Eighteen railway bridges will be constructed in 11 districts at a cost of Rs 948.30 crore. The preliminary works will be carried out at a cost of Rs 201.88 crore.

She also announced two other road projects in Krishnagiri district, to ensure easy access to the SIPCOT industrial complex near Bargur.

Concluding the statement, Jayalalithaa expressed hope that the announcements made by her would reduce traffic congestion, help people transport within the State without any difficulty and reduce the time of travel, besides improving the road infrastructure.
